Cannabis in South Africa
Cannabis in South Africa has deep roots, used for centuries by indigenous peoples for medicinal and cultural purposes. After decades of prohibition, the Constitutional Court decriminalized personal use in 2018, and the Cannabis for Private Purposes Bill in 2024 legalized adult use. The plant, known locally as 'dagga,' has a complex history tied to colonial and apartheid-era restrictions. Today, South Africa is a significant producer, and the legal landscape continues to evolve. For anyone exploring cannabis, understanding its global history adds perspective—whether you're in New Buffalo or Belmont, knowing the legal and cultural context helps you make informed choices.
